Foreword
CAB water softeners are units for domestic use which
eliminate calcium and magnesium salts from water, which determine the hardness of the
water. The treatment is referred to as "water softening" and consist in
replacing said calcium and magnesium salts (salts which are not easily dissolved) with the
corresponding sodium salts (which are highly soluble). In fact, it is common knowledge
that the hardness of water causes the formation of scale in electric household appliances
(washing machines, dishwasher, boilers, etc.), in thermo-hydraulic equipment and plants in
civilian environments (hotels, restaurants, clinics and hospitals, etc.) and in
hydro-thermal plants in general. The elimination of the hardness of the water may be total
or partial depending on the specific use the water is intended for. The water softeners
are equipped with "untreated/softened water" mixing devices, which enable the
desired hardness to be obtained. The process of replacing the salts is performed by using
ion-exchange resins. These resins, once "exhausted", are "regenerated"
using a solution of sodium chloride: common coarse salt. The regeneration of the resins
can be controlled either automatically - on a "time" or "volume" basis
- or manually. The materials employed in their manufacture are in accordance with the
requirements set out for the production of drinking water. In addition, the apparatus is
equipped with a device for disinfecting the resins during the regeneration phase in
conformity with the regulations in the Minister's Decree nº443 dated 21/12/90.
Choosing a water softener
When choosing a water softener, the fundamental parameter
is represented by the quantity of the water with a certain hardness which can be softened
between one regeneration and the next (Cyclic production).
Multiplying the value of the quantity of water to be softened by the value of the hardness
expressed in "Fr (1ºFr. equals 10 ppm of CaCO3), the resulting value must fall
between the "normal" and "maximum" values indicated in the table.
Consequently, it must be ensured that the hourly rate of flow falls within the range of
the minimum and maximum values indicated.
In the selection table, each water softener model features the "normal cycle"
and "maximum cycle" referring to the respective salt consumption.
Versions:
The CAB line water softeners are available in the following
versions:
CAB/STD: regenerated on a time basis during the night.
CAB/EVT: these water softeners are equipped with check valves and
electronic-volumetric-type control with the function of economizing on salt consumption.
The valve is set to volume-based regeneration, with an additional setting to time-based
regeneration, allowing for the possibility that the system may not he used for a few days.
The time-based regeneration function can be regulated with time periods in the range
1-9days.
Structural features:
- TANK: made from glass-fibre reinforced polyester inserted in
an enbloc high-density polyethylene structure which also contains the brine compartment.
- VALVE:
a) for the CAB/STD model, the valve is a motor-operated
multi-way electromechanical type with time programmer;
b) for the CAB/EVT model, the valve is a volume-based electronic type. The valve body is
in NORYL.
- RESIN: strong positive ion with sodic cycle for use with
foodstuffs.
- REGENERATION: brine sucked directly from the preparation
tank by means of an ejector built into the valve, fitted with safety ball cock.
- STERILIZER: sucked-in brine RIGESTER device. -HARDNESS
MIXING: the valve comes complete with a device for mixing untreated water andf softened
water in order to obtain the desired hardness.
Operating features:
- Min./max. operating pressure: 2-7 bar
- Min./max. operating temperature: 5-40ºC
- Supply voltage/frequency: 220V-50 Hz
- Max. pressure drop when in operation: 10 water column m
- Washing required (average): daily
- Resin regeneration time: 110 min.
- Regeneration start-up: time or volume based
